Lax U'u'la Camp (Lelu Island)
Territory
Gwis Hawaal, Gitwilgyoots (Tsimshian Nation)
occupation
August 2015 - Inactive
In May 2015, the Lax Kw'alaams community voted unanimously against an LNG facility and marine terminal on Lelu Island. On July 13, 2015, BC passed the LNG Project Agreements Act to allow Petronas to build an LNG export facility on Lax U'u'la (Lelu Island). At this point, the Gitwilgyoots had had enough. On Aug.25, 2015, Sm'yooget Yahaan (Donald Wesley), Gwis Hawaal (Ken Lawson) and other Tsimshian members set up camp on Lax U'u'la. Despite clear direction from their nation to stay away from Flora Bank, contractor companies under the direction of the Prince Rupert Port Authority began test drilling near Lax U'u'la on Sept.11. The LNG contractors have been turned away by the Gitwilgyoots each time they attempt to do work at Lelu Island and Flora Bank.
Members of the Gitwilgyoots Tribe have established a camp with multiple cabins on the island, and a healing center is being planned. Youth from the area visit the site to learn about harvesting and preserving traditional foods and about rights and title issues/
Multiple nations and many people, native and non-native, are getting involved in supporting this cause, including the Nine Allied Tribes of the Lax Kw'alaams, who announced Title litigation to Lax U'u'la on Sept. 16, 2015.
